Trong những năm gần đây, nghiên cứu về ảnh hưởng của các mạng lưới đã mở rộng ra ngoài kỷ luật xã hội học sang lĩnh vực quản lý và nghiên cứu tổ chức. Tài liệu hiện có chứa nhiều ví dụ về những nỗ lực khác nhau nhằm nghiên cứu các mạng lưới chính thức/không chính thức ở các cấp độ khác nhau trong một tổ chức. Với sự phát triển nhanh chóng của Internet, nhu cầu làm sáng tỏ động lực của các mạng lưới trong thế giới ảo ngày càng gia tăng. Khác với các nghiên cứu tập trung vào các mạng lưới giữa các cá nhân trên Web, nghiên cứu hiện tại khám phá ảnh hưởng của các mạng lưới thương mại điện tử đối với các công ty thương mại điện tử. Điều này được thực hiện bằng cách lấy mẫu các công ty thương mại điện tử từ ngành ngân hàng và tuyển dụng tại Ấn Độ. Sự so sánh ảnh hưởng này (của các mạng lưới thương mại điện tử đến các công ty thương mại điện tử) với ảnh hưởng của các mạng lưới doanh nghiệp ngoài đời thực (đối với các công ty doanh nghiệp ngoài đời thực) làm nổi bật những điểm tương đồng cũng như khác biệt tồn tại do sự khác nhau giữa các nền tảng. Kết quả nghiên cứu cũng chỉ ra sự khác biệt trong ngành và cung cấp hướng dẫn cho các nhà thực hành thương mại điện tử trong việc quản lý và tối ưu hóa mạng lưới của họ.
