Analyses the economic effects of international tourism on EC member states. Tourism has been a neglected transactions indicator for EC integration. Emphasis is given to the equilibrating role of tourism on the balance of payments for most member states; also highlights the positive regional benefits from tourism, examines a case for a stronger and more co‐ordinated tourism policy for the EC. Finally, considers the role of tourism as a vehicle for reintegrating the countries of Eastern Europe.
