Tóm tắt

Hệ thống chất chống oxy hóa phức tạp đã được phát triển ở động vật có vú để giảm thiểu stress oxy hóa. Tuy nhiên, các loài phản ứng dư thừa do oxy và nitơ vẫn có thể dẫn đến tổn thương oxy hóa cho mô và cơ quan. Stress oxy hóa được coi là một cơ chế bệnh lý kết hợp, và nó góp phần vào sự khởi đầu và tiến trình của tổn thương gan. Nhiều yếu tố nguy cơ, bao gồm rượu, thuốc, ô nhiễm môi trường và xạ trị, có thể làm tăng stress oxy hóa trong gan, điều này lại dẫn đến các bệnh gan nghiêm trọng, như bệnh gan do rượu và viêm gan nhiễm mỡ không do rượu.
