Các tác giả phát triển và giải thích một khung để hướng dẫn nghiên cứu về mối quan hệ giữa kiến thức nội dung của giáo viên toán và việc dạy học của họ. Khung này có hai chiều. Các chiều được xác định là (a) các yếu tố của việc giảng dạy và (b) các quy trình giảng dạy mà trong đó kiến thức nội dung có ý nghĩa quan trọng. Sự tương tác giữa các yếu tố của việc giảng dạy và các quy trình giảng dạy được thảo luận một cách lý thuyết, xem xét các kết nối đến tài liệu hiện có về vai trò của kiến thức chuyên môn của giáo viên.
