Structural and sequence analyses indicate that the reaction center of PSII is derived from purple nonsulfur bacteria whereas that from PSI is derived from green sulfur bacteria neither of which can split water to form oxygen ( 81 ).
Ribosomal sequence homology and structural analysis of the cytochrome b/c1 complex in the mitochondrion suggests that the mitochondrion may itself have been derived from an endosymbiont closely related to extant purple nonsulfur photosynthetic bacteria potentially conferring an ancestral anoxygenic photosynthetic pathway on the host-cell lineage ( 82 – 84 ).

Modern phycomas are rich in lipids and consequently buoyant; they can be found on beaches where they are washed in by waves.
