Tóm tắtLiên Minh Châu Âu sắp có kế hoạch nới lỏng sự giám sát của mình đối với các sinh vật biến đổi gen, tập trung vào các loại cây và sản phẩm được tạo ra thông qua một số kỹ thuật di truyền mới nhất định. Mục tiêu là thúc đẩy các kỹ thuật di truyền mới như một công nghệ đổi mới và sử dụng nó như một phương tiện để chuyển đổi nông nghiệp hướng tới sự bền vững. Bài viết này mô tả và đánh giá cải cách đã được lên kế hoạch. Nó thảo luận xem liệu các tiêu chuẩn về tính chắc chắn và hợp pháp có được đáp ứng hay không, cách mà các tác động môi trường được xem xét, các mục tiêu phát triển bền vững được tích hợp như thế nào, những tác động kinh tế - xã hội nào có thể dự đoán được, và liệu luật pháp có cấp cao hơn có được tôn trọng hay không. Khi phát hiện ra một số thiếu sót, một cách tiếp cận thay thế được đề xuất, kết hợp việc nới lỏng một phần việc giám sát hành chính với việc tích hợp tốt hơn các mục tiêu phát triển bền vững. Những thuận lợi cho nông nghiệp hữu cơ và nông nghiệp không có GMO theo phương thức thông thường cũng được phác thảo.
