Nhiều loài động vật định hướng đến nguồn mùi trong các môi trường nước, nơi mà các dòng chảy và bề mặt nền khác nhau tác động đến động lực học của các lớp biên đáy. Vì sự phân tán của các hóa chất là do cơ học chất lỏng của môi trường cụ thể, chúng tôi đã định lượng sự thay đổi trong cấu trúc mịn của một luồng mùi dưới các điều kiện động lực học khác nhau trong lớp biên đáy của một kênh thí nghiệm trong phòng. Chúng tôi đã lấy mẫu các luồng mùi hỗn loạn ở tần số 10 Hz bằng một cảm biến vi hóa học (đường kính 150 µm) dưới hai tốc độ dòng chảy: 3.8 và 14.4 cm/giây, và ở độ cao 1, 8, 50 mm trên bề mặt nền. Những khoảng cách này trên bề mặt nền xảy ra trong các vùng dòng chảy khác nhau của lớp biên và tương quan với vị trí của các bộ phận cảm biến hóa học ở động vật giáp xác trong dòng chảy của lớp biên. Tốc độ dòng chảy cao thể hiện một mức độ hỗn loạn lớn hơn và có nhiều xung mùi rõ rệt hơn so với tốc độ dòng chảy thấp. Nói chung, tín hiệu mùi cho thấy sự biến đổi tạm thời cao ở dòng chảy nhanh ở độ cao 1 và 8 mm trên bề mặt nền. Trong dòng chảy chậm, sự biến đổi tạm thời đạt cực đại ở 50 mm trên bề mặt nền, cho thấy sự biến thiên nhiều hơn so với cùng độ cao ở dòng chảy nhanh. Những mẫu hình này của các tín hiệu mùi phần nào xuất phát từ sự khác biệt về độ cao trên bề mặt nền của trục chính của luồng mùi ở hai tốc độ dòng chảy. Các kết quả của chúng tôi hàm ý rằng các động vật định hướng hóa học tới một nguồn mùi sẽ cần phải bù đắp cho những thuộc tính động lực học khác nhau của sự vận chuyển và phân tán mùi.
