Hiện nay, chi giun tròn Rhabdochona Railliet, 1916 (Rhabdochonidae) bao gồm 92 loài có thể hợp lệ, chủ yếu là ký sinh trùng đường ruột của cá nước ngọt ở tất cả các vùng zoogeographic. Do sự thiếu hụt các nghiên cứu phát sinh chủng loại sử dụng các phương pháp phân tử trong nhóm giun tròn này, một nỗ lực nhằm đánh giá mối quan hệ giữa các ký sinh trùng này và sinh địa lý của chúng dựa trên những đặc điểm hình thái học và mối quan hệ giữa ký sinh trùng và vật chủ đã được thực hiện. Chỉ các vật chủ chính xác thì mới nên được xem xét trong việc đánh giá này. Có vẻ như, trong quá trình tiến hóa của các loài Rhabdochona, số lượng răng prostomal phía trước tăng lên, mất đi các cánh bên, gân bên phải có hình dạng giống như thuyền và một gai lưng phát triển ở đầu xa của nó, và đầu xa của gân bên trái dần đạt được một cấu trúc phức tạp hơn; trứng có bề mặt nhẵn được coi là nguyên thủy hơn. Các loài giun tròn thuộc chi này có thể đã xuất hiện ở khu vực Nam Á hiện nay vào đầu Kỷ Tertiary. Gần nhất với kiểu ban đầu có lẽ là các thành viên của phân chi Globochona Moravec, 1972, từ đó có thể phát sinh các dòng dõi dẫn đến các phân chi Globochonoides Moravec, 1975, Rhabdochona Railliet, 1916 và Sinonema Moravec, 1975. Hình thái học của các loài Rhabdochona thể hiện mối quan hệ gần gũi giữa động vật có xương sống Palaearctic của những giun tròn này với các loài Nearctic, và động vật phương Đông với động vật ở Ethiopia. Các loài Neotropical có thể được phát sinh từ các thành viên Nearctic của phân chi Rhabdochona; cái sau có thể đã xâm nhập, cùng với các vật chủ leuciscine, vào Bắc Mỹ từ Palaearctic Eurasia vào cuối Kỷ Tertiary. Sự phân bố các loài Palaearctic của Rhabdochona tương ứng với các phức hợp faunistic trong quan niệm của các nhà ngư học.
