Những tác động của cuộc khủng hoảng kinh tế toàn cầu năm 2008, những vấn đề khó giải quyết của nạn đói nghèo kéo dài và sự biến đổi môi trường đã thu hút sự chú ý đến các tổ chức kết hợp doanh nghiệp với mục đích xã hội ẩn dấu. Sự quan tâm học thuật đối với doanh nghiệp xã hội (SE) đã tiến triển vượt ra ngoài sự chú trọng ban đầu vào định nghĩa và bối cảnh để nghiên cứu quản lý và hiệu suất của chúng.
