Nghiên cứu này nhằm điều tra ảnh hưởng của việc điều chỉnh cơn đau đồng vị (homotopic) và khác vị (heterotopic) đến tính dẻo của vỏ não trong thời gian ngắn. Glutamate (cơn đau trong tình trạng ton) hoặc nước muối đẳng trương (sham) được tiêm vào cơ thang (homotopic) và vào cơ cái (heterotopic). Kích thích điện cơ bắp được áp dụng cho cơ thang với cường độ đến ngưỡng đau, và các tiềm khả cảm giác cổ điển được ghi lại bằng điện não đồ 128 kênh. Các thời gian đỉnh tại N100, P200 và P300 đã được trích xuất và vị trí/cường độ của các nguồn điện dipole tương ứng và nhiều dipole đã được ước lượng. Một mối tương quan tích cực tại P200 giữa ngưỡng đau điện sau cơn đau ton và tọa độ z sau cơn đau ton (P = 0.032) đã được tìm thấy cho CPM đồng vị. Đối với CPM khác vị, không có tình trạng giảm đau đáng kể nào được phát hiện và một sự dịch chuyển dipole của tọa độ z P300 (P = 0.001) đã được tìm thấy giữa cơn đau glutamate và sham (P = 0.009).
