Việc mô tả một cách chính xác tình trạng thiếu nhân sự là điều khó khăn khi thiếu nguồn thông tin đáng tin cậy và gặp phải các vấn đề trong việc định nghĩa các thuật ngữ. Mặc dù đã có những giai đoạn mà cơ hội việc làm rất hạn chế, song có vẻ như chưa bao giờ có thời điểm nào mà nguồn cung cấp các nhà tâm lý học trường học đủ để đáp ứng nhu cầu. Tình trạng thiếu nhân sự gần đây xảy ra sau một giai đoạn vài thập kỷ mà sự phát triển tổng thể của lĩnh vực này đã gia tăng chóng mặt. Một trong những yếu tố giải thích cho tình trạng thiếu hụt hiện nay là mối quan hệ nghịch đảo giữa việc quản lý chuyên nghiệp và nguồn cung cấp các nhà tâm lý học trường học trong đào tạo trong tương lai.
