Xác định rõ ràng từ những ngày đầu của thực hành tâm lý, đã có sự nhận thức rằng những trải nghiệm sống tiêu cực và các sự kiện căng thẳng có thể thúc đẩy sự xuất hiện của các rối loạn tâm thần (Garmezy & Rutter, 1985). Gần 200 năm trước, Pinel đã viết về các rủi ro tâm lý liên quan đến những trở ngại bất ngờ hoặc hoàn cảnh bất lợi, và được báo cáo rằng câu hỏi ban đầu của ông đối với các bệnh nhân tâm thần mới nhập viện là: “Bạn có phải chịu đựng phiền muộn, đau buồn hoặc rủi ro tài chính không?” Tuy nhiên, mặc dù đã có sự công nhận rằng nhiều yếu tố căng thẳng có thể đóng vai trò trong sự hình thành của rối loạn tâm thần từ rất lâu, nhưng việc nghiên cứu hệ thống các tác động này vẫn là một điều khá mới mẻ.
