Tóm tắt

Transmission electron spectroscopic investigations of thin layers of AuSn on single‐crystal Au foils–prepared by dipping the foils for varying lengths of time into ethylenediamine solutions of K4 Sn9–demonstrated epitaxial growth of AuSn crystallites. It has been known for a long time that Sn ions immediately attack gold, but this is the first close characterization of the surface species formed.

The Au foils were supported on 200 mesh Au grids and immersed into solutions of K4Sn9in purified ethylenediamine (en): the “light dip” sample was treated for 5 s in a 10–4Msolution while the “heavy dip” sample was treated for 30 min in a saturated solution. The samples were then rinsed several times in fresh en. All work was performed under helium ( < l ppm O2).

The instruments used were: (a) a Philips 400T (FEG) TEM at 100 kV with an energy dispersive X‐ray detector; (b) a Philips 430T (LaB6) TEM at 300 kV and (c) a VG HB 501A STEM at 100 kV.
