Ghép gan là phương pháp điều trị duy nhất có hiệu quả cho xơ gan giai đoạn cuối và suy gan cấp tính, nhưng sự thiếu hụt gan người hiến tặng là một trở ngại lớn cho việc ghép gan. Gần đây, các tế bào gốc đa năng cảm ứng (iPSCs) được tạo ra từ việc lập trình lại các nguyên bào sợi somatic, đã được chứng minh là tương tự như tế bào gốc phôi (ES) ở chỗ chúng có đặc tính đa năng và tiềm năng phân hóa thành tất cả các dòng tế bào
