The lifetime of a central H3O+in the H9O4+complex should be somewhat greater and that of a peripheral H3O+somewhat less than that in ice crystals because of the electrostatic effect of the secondary and tertiary H2O molecules which are oriented towards the center.
Fluorescence transformation is the prototropic or protolytic transformation of a molecule due to a pK change upon excitation. According toTh. Föorster(Fluoreszenz organishcher Verbindungen. Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht Göttingen 1951) this change can amount to about 5 to 7 pK units. It appears as a pH shift of the point where the fluorescence spectrum changes (from the spectrum of the acid towards the spectrum of the base) relative to the corresponding point where the absorption spectrum changes. The effect is only observable if the reaction takes place within the lifetime of the excited state (≈ 10−8sec).
pK = the negative logarithm of the acid dissociation constant.
