Chúng tôi đã điều tra vai trò của nhiễm virus viêm gan siêu vi B trong sự phát triển của ung thư biểu mô gan ở những bệnh nhân nhiễm virus viêm gan C mà không có xơ gan. Trong số 253 bệnh nhân, 8 người không có xơ gan (nhóm 1); nhóm 2 bao gồm 245 bệnh nhân còn lại. Các phát hiện lâm sàng bệnh lý đã được so sánh giữa các nhóm. Gen x của virus viêm gan siêu vi B được tìm kiếm trong các khối u và gan không ung thư liền kề. Nhóm 1 cho thấy các thông số chức năng gan tốt hơn và tình trạng viêm gan hoạt động nhẹ hơn so với nhóm 2. Tỷ lệ bệnh nhân có kháng thể chống virus viêm gan siêu vi B có xu hướng cao hơn ở nhóm 1 so với nhóm 2. Tỷ lệ bệnh nhân có RNA virus viêm gan siêu vi B trong các khối u cao hơn một cách đáng kể ở nhóm 1 so với nhóm 2. Tất cả bệnh nhân nhóm 1 đều có tiền sử hoặc nhiễm virus viêm gan siêu vi B tiềm ẩn. Nhiễm virus viêm gan siêu vi B trước đó hoặc tiềm ẩn có thể là yếu tố then chốt trong sự phát triển của ung thư biểu mô gan ở những bệnh nhân nhiễm virus viêm gan C mà không có xơ gan.
