Các vấn đề về chân liên quan đến Xơ cứng hệ thống (SSc)/Xơ cứng da đã được báo cáo là phổ biến và gây khó khăn. Chỉ có một số dữ liệu hạn chế mô tả cụ thể những thay đổi cơ học xảy ra ở bàn chân trong SSc. Một dự án thí điểm được thực hiện chuẩn bị cho thử nghiệm này đã xác nhận các báo cáo trước đó về sự suy giảm liên quan đến bàn chân và chức năng bàn chân giảm ở những người mắc SSc, đồng thời chứng minh mối liên quan đến nguyên nhân cơ học. Mục tiêu chính của thử nghiệm này là đánh giá xem có thể cải thiện cơn đau chân và tình trạng sức khỏe liên quan đến bàn chân ở những người mắc Xơ cứng hệ thống hay không thông qua việc cung cấp một miếng lót chân giảm áp đơn giản. Thử nghiệm đề xuất là một thử nghiệm lâm sàng ngẫu nhiên có kiểm soát đa trung tâm, theo sau một nghiên cứu thí điểm đã hoàn thành. Tại bốn trung tâm tham gia, 140 bệnh nhân đồng ý mắc SSc và có cơn đau ở lòng bàn chân sẽ được ngẫu nhiên nhận hoặc một miếng lót chân có sẵn trên thị trường nhằm giảm áp và cách nhiệt, hoặc một miếng lót giả không có tính năng giảm đệm hoặc cách nhiệt. Điểm kết thúc chính là sự giảm đau được đo lường bằng chỉ số Chức năng Bàn chân (Foot Function Index) - phần cơn đau, 12 tuần sau khi bắt đầu can thiệp. Người tham gia sẽ hoàn thành thang đo kết quả chính (phần cơn đau của chỉ số Chức năng Bàn chân) trước khi ngẫu nhiên và tại 12 tuần sau khi ngẫu nhiên. Các kết quả thứ cấp bao gồm cơn đau và khuyết tật do người tham gia báo cáo, được lấy từ Bảng câu hỏi Đau và Khuyết tật ở Bàn chân Manchester, cùng với áp lực lòng bàn chân có và không có miếng lót chân. Giao thức thử nghiệm này đề xuất một đánh giá nghiêm ngặt và có thể quan trọng đối với một phương pháp điều trị đơn giản và dễ cung cấp, nếu có hiệu quả, có thể mang lại lợi ích lớn cho nhóm bệnh nhân này.
