Mục tiêu. Tìm hiểu mối liên hệ giữa tình trạng tăng trưởng kém ở trẻ em và trầm cảm sau sinh ở mẹ. Phương pháp. Trẻ em từ 2 tuổi trở xuống được xác định từ hồ sơ giám sát sức khỏe trẻ em trong cộng đồng nếu cân nặng của chúng giảm qua 2 kênh centile trên biểu đồ tăng trưởng tiêu chuẩn hoặc giảm dưới centile thứ hai. Các bà mẹ của những trẻ này được mời hoàn thành Thang đo Trầm cảm sau sinh Edinburgh và phần phụ của Thang đo Lo âu và Trầm cảm Bệnh viện. Những mẹ có điểm số vượt quá giá trị ngưỡng trên bất kỳ thang đo nào sẽ được phỏng vấn bằng Lịch phỏng vấn lâm sàng được sửa đổi. Hơn nữa, các cuộc phỏng vấn lâm sàng với các bà mẹ này cho thấy 21% nhóm chỉ định và 11% nhóm đối chứng đáp ứng tiêu chí cho tập episode trầm cảm (OR: 1.88; 95% CI: 1.21-2.94). Kết luận. Trầm cảm ở những bà mẹ có trẻ gặp tình trạng tăng trưởng kém trong 2 năm đầu đời lớn hơn đáng kể so với những bà mẹ có trẻ phát triển cân nặng hợp lý. Xét đến tỷ lệ trầm cảm cao ở các bà mẹ có trẻ tăng cân kém, việc quản lý lâm sàng khi xuất hiện một trong hai vấn đề này nên tập trung vào cả hai thành viên trong cặp mẹ - con và vào sự tương tác giữa mẹ và con. Những phát hiện này có ý nghĩa đối với tất cả các chuyên gia làm việc trong chăm sóc sức khỏe ban đầu và thứ cấp.
