Phương pháp điều trị tốt nhất cho hoại tử xương khớp hông phụ thuộc vào việc chẩn đoán sớm và chính xác. Hình ảnh cộng hưởng từ (MRI) đã trở thành công cụ chẩn đoán được khuyến nghị cho mục đích này. Để tối ưu hóa độ chính xác chẩn đoán của MRI, cần xem xét đến các bệnh lý khớp hông khác có thể gây phù nề tủy xương. Nhiều nghiên cứu đã chỉ ra những cải tiến trong quy trình quét, các phương pháp xác định kích thước tổn thương và các phương thức đánh giá hình ảnh. Các lợi ích tiềm năng của những tiến bộ này sẽ không được phát huy đầy đủ cho đến khi có sự đồng thuận lớn hơn về cách tiếp cận để đánh giá và phân loại hoại tử xương hông bằng MRI.
