Người ta tin rằng sự thiếu hụt estrogen góp phần quan trọng vào bệnh sinh của hội chứng chuyển hóa ở giai đoạn mãn kinh và các triệu chứng có thể được cải thiện bằng liệu pháp estradiol. Nghiên cứu hiện tại báo cáo về hiệu quả của các hạt nano estradiol được bao encapsulated trong việc điều trị tình trạng rối loạn lipid huyết sau mãn kinh. Các hạt nano estradiol bao poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) được chuẩn bị bằng phương pháp nhũ hóa–khuếch tán–bốc hơi và được đánh giá trong mô hình chuột gây tăng lipid máu do chế độ ăn kiêng cao chất béo, thiếu estrogen (cắt buồng trứng). Kết quả thu được cho thấy rằng các hạt nano estradiol có hiệu quả ngang bằng hoặc hơn trong việc điều trị các tình trạng tăng lipid máu do thiếu estrogen với liều lượng và tần suất thấp hơn gấp ba lần so với dạng dung dịch thuốc dùng qua đường uống. Tóm lại, các kết quả này chứng minh khả năng của các hạt nano trong việc cải thiện sinh khả dụng/hiệu quả của estradiol qua đường uống.
