Mô hình các sợi lưới đã được nghiên cứu trên các động mạch nội sọ của sáu bệnh nhân bị xuất huyết dưới nhện mà không có nguyên nhân rõ ràng. Ở mỗi bệnh nhân, lớp giữa (media) của tất cả các động mạch nội sọ chính chứa ít sợi lưới hơn nhiều so với các cá thể không có bệnh mạch máu. Những sợi này chủ yếu thưa hơn ở phần ngoài của lớp giữa, giống như mô hình thấy ở các bệnh nhân có phình động mạch anh đào bị vỡ. Kết luận cho thấy sự thiếu hụt sợi lưới có thể làm tăng nguy cơ vỡ phình động mạch ngay cả ở giai đoạn đầu hình thành phình.
