Khớp sọ đơn (SSC) là một rối loạn bẩm sinh về mặt vòm sọ, trong đó sự hội tụ sớm của một trong các khớp sọ dẫn đến hạn chế và biến dạng sự phát triển của hộp sọ và não bộ bên dưới. Rối loạn này bắt đầu trước sinh và xảy ra trong một giai đoạn quan trọng của sự tăng trưởng và phát triển nhanh chóng của não bộ chưa trưởng thành. Khớp sọ đơn mang theo nguy cơ đã biết về sự suy giảm phát triển. Tuy nhiên, các tác động phát triển thần kinh của SSC trước khi điều trị vẫn chưa được hiểu rõ hoàn toàn. Mẫu nghiên cứu bao gồm 56 bệnh nhân liên tiếp mắc SSC chưa phẫu thuật (sagittal, metopic và unicoronal). Các bệnh nhân có độ tuổi từ 4 đến 16 tháng (M = 8.9 tháng, SD = 2.9 tháng). Chức năng phát triển thần kinh được đánh giá bằng chỉ số phát triển tinh thần (Mental Development Index) và chỉ số phát triển vận động (Psychomotor Development Index) của Thang đo phát triển trẻ sơ sinh Bayley, phiên bản thứ hai. Trẻ em mắc SSC thể hiện điểm số trung bình về phát triển tinh thần (M = 97.7, SD = 6.7, p < 0.05) và phát triển vận động (M = 87.7, SD = 13.0, p < 0.001) thấp hơn đáng kể so với mức trung bình của dân số chuẩn. Sự phân bố các điểm số này cũng khác biệt đáng kể so với phân bố chuẩn; tỷ lệ trẻ em gặp phải sự chậm trễ phát triển vận động nghiêm trọng cao hơn được phát hiện, và không có trẻ nào thể hiện sự phát triển nhanh hơn. So sánh giữa các nhóm con theo các loại chẩn đoán chính trong mẫu nghiên cứu không cho thấy sự khác biệt đáng kể về chức năng kỹ năng tinh thần hoặc vận động.
