Ralstonia solanacearum phát triển mạnh mẽ trong mạch nhựa của cây và gây ra bệnh héo vi khuẩn mặc dù hàm lượng dinh dưỡng trong nhựa gỗ rất thấp. Chúng tôi phát hiện rằng R. solanacearum điều chỉnh cây chủ để tăng cường chất dinh dưỡng trong nhựa gỗ cây cà chua, cho phép nó phát triển tốt hơn từ nhựa cây bị nhiễm so với nhựa cây khỏe mạnh. Phân tích chuyển hóa không định hướng GC/MS đã xác định 22 chất chuyển hóa được làm giàu trong nhựa cây bị nhiễm R. solanacearum. Trong số này, tám chất có thể phục vụ như là nguồn carbon hoặc nitrogen duy nhất cho R. solanacearum. Putrescine, một polyamine không là nguồn carbon hay nitrogen duy nhất cho R. solanacearum, được làm giàu 76 lần lên tới 37 µM trong nhựa cây bị nhiễm R. solanacearum. R. solanacearum tổng hợp putrescine qua enzyme decarboxylase SpeC ornithine. Một đột biến ΔspeC cần ≥ 15 µM putrescine ngoại sinh để phát triển và không thể tự phát triển trong hệ mạch nhựa ngay cả khi cây được xử lý bằng putrescine. Tuy nhiên, việc đồng tiêm chủng với kiểu dại đã cứu vãn sự phát triển của ΔspeC, chỉ ra rằng R. solanacearum sản xuất và xuất khẩu putrescine vào nhựa cây.
