Khó khăn trong việc hiểu cấu trúc và chức năng của các chương trình máy tính là rất nghiêm trọng, đặc biệt là khi người học được tự do khám phá các tài liệu siêu văn bản, nơi khả năng mất phương hướng là rất lớn. Lý thuyết mô hình tâm lý là một nỗ lực nhằm mô hình hóa và giải thích sự hiểu biết của con người về các đối tượng và hiện tượng trong quá trình học tập (và các hoạt động khác). Nghiên cứu về các mô hình tâm lý trong tương tác người-máy có thể xác định những đặc điểm quan trọng của các quá trình nhận thức và hỗ trợ trong việc phát triển các hướng dẫn dựa trên nghiên cứu cho việc thiết kế các hệ thống học tương tác. Bài viết này kêu gọi nghiên cứu chương trình về các mô hình tâm lý của người học và cung cấp hướng dẫn cho việc tiến hành nghiên cứu như vậy.
