Sự xuất hiện của các chất chuyển hóa thứ cấp trong vi tảo (protoctista) được thảo luận liên quan đến mối quan hệ phát sinh loài hoặc phân loại của các sinh vật. Cơ chế sinh tổng hợp của một số chất chuyển hóa như độc tố gây tê liệt động vật có vỏ và độc tố polyether cũng được thảo luận, cùng với các khía cạnh di truyền liên quan đến sản xuất chất chuyển hóa thứ cấp.
