Thời gian bảo quản của các tế bào hồng cầu được truyền cho bệnh nhân nặng có mối liên hệ với gia tăng bệnh tật và tỷ lệ tử vong. Tuy nhiên, liệu có sự liên quan giữa thời gian bảo quản của các tế bào hồng cầu truyền cho bệnh nhân bị sốc nhiễm trùng và nguy cơ phát triển tổn thương phổi cấp tính (ALI) hoặc hội chứng suy hô hấp cấp tính (ARDS) hay không vẫn chưa được biết rõ. Chúng tôi đã tiến hành một nghiên cứu quan sát hồi cứu đối với 96 bệnh nhân nặng bị sốc nhiễm trùng, 176 bệnh nhân nặng bị chấn thương và 125 bệnh nhân nặng không bị chấn thương, không có sốc nhiễm trùng. Kết quả chính là sự phát triển của ALI/ARDS lên đến 96 giờ sau truyền máu. Trong số 96 bệnh nhân bị sốc nhiễm trùng, có 49 (51%) bệnh nhân đã phát triển ALI/ARDS. Thời gian bảo quản trung bình của máu được truyền trong nhóm ALI/ARDS cao hơn (24,5 ngày, khoảng tứ phân (IQR) 20–31) so với những bệnh nhân không phát triển ALI/ARDS (21 ngày, IQR 15–27, p = 0.018). Thời gian bảo quản trung bình lâu hơn độc lập liên quan đến nguy cơ gia tăng phát triển ALI/ARDS trong vòng 4 ngày tiếp theo (tỷ số nguy cơ 1.8, p = 0.028). Mối liên hệ tương tự không được ghi nhận ở bệnh nhân chấn thương hoặc không bị nhiễm trùng, không chấn thương.
