Bằng cách áp dụng ba kỹ thuật mô hình hóa toán học, nghiên cứu này đề xuất và kiểm tra tính phù hợp của một mô hình thành tích học tập, sau đó ước lượng tầm quan trọng tương đối của bốn yếu tố dự đoán thành tích: khả năng học tập, định hướng mục tiêu thành tích, việc sử dụng công nghệ giáo dục và mật độ mạng xã hội. Dựa trên lý thuyết mạng xã hội, kết quả từ nghiên cứu này cho thấy mật độ mạng xã hội là một yếu tố dự đoán có tính chất quan trọng và độc đáo đối với thành tích học tập, cho thấy rằng "ai bạn biết" có ý nghĩa trong các lớp học lớn. Tuy nhiên, nghiên cứu này cũng chỉ ra rằng khả năng học tập là yếu tố chiếm ưu thế nhất trong việc giải thích thành tích học tập.
