Phân tích đồng vị của di cốt con người có khả năng thay đổi hiểu biết của chúng ta về lối sống và di cư tiền sử tại Úc, nhưng rất ít phân tích như vậy đã được thực hiện ở nước này cho đến nay. Ở đây, chúng tôi báo cáo nghiên cứu đồng vị đa phương pháp đầu tiên khu vực về di cốt con người trước khi liên hệ từ Úc. Chúng tôi đã thu được các giá trị đồng vị δ13Ccollagen, δ15Ncollagen, δ18Obioapatite, δ13Cbioapatite và 87Sr/86Sr từ ba ngôi mộ phức tạp và hai ngôi mộ đơn giản trên bãi biển từ Nhóm Đảo Flinders, Queensland. Nghiên cứu này có hai mục tiêu. Một là đánh giá cách mà chế độ ăn uống của các cá nhân so sánh với các quần thể trước khi liên hệ ở nơi khác trong khu vực. Mục tiêu khác là kiểm tra giả thuyết rằng loại hình mai táng là chỉ thị cho địa vị địa phương/không phải địa phương. Chúng tôi phát hiện rằng chế độ ăn uống của các cá nhân rất đa dạng và bao gồm một phần trăm tương đối cao thực phẩm từ cấp độ sinh thái thấp. Về sự khác biệt trong thực hành mai táng, chúng tôi phát hiện những người được mai táng phức tạp đã lớn lên tại Nhóm Đảo Flinders, trong khi những người được mai táng trên bãi biển có lẽ lớn lên ở nơi khác. Những kết quả này nhấn mạnh sự phức tạp trong cuộc sống của người Úc bản địa sống trên các đảo và cung cấp thông tin cho sự hiểu biết của chúng ta về chế độ ăn uống và sự di chuyển của họ trước khi có liên hệ.
