We show that the 4‐oxo analogue of N‐acetyl‐D‐neuraminic acid strongly inhibits N‐acetylneuraminate lyase (NeuAc aldolase, EC 4.1.3.3) from Clostridum perfringens (Ki = 0.025 mM) and Escherichia coli (Ki = 0.15 mM). In each case the inhibition was competitive.
