Những vết thương mãn tính không lành được gây ra gánh nặng lớn về mặt sinh học, tâm lý, xã hội và tài chính đối với cả bệnh nhân và hệ thống y tế rộng lớn hơn. Tình trạng viêm nghiêm trọng bệnh lý đóng một vai trò quan trọng trong việc phá vỡ quá trình lành vết thương bình thường. Nguyên nhân của vết thương mãn tính (loét tĩnh mạch, động mạch, do áp lực và tiểu đường) có thể được nghiên cứu thông qua việc so sánh giữa quá trình lành vết thương bình thường và phản ứng viêm bất thường được tạo ra bởi các thành phần chung trong vết thương mãn tính (lão hóa, thiếu oxy, tổn thương thiếu máu cục bộ - tái tưới máu, và sự xâm nhập của vi khuẩn). Chăm sóc nền giường vết thương thông qua cắt bỏ, băng bó, và kháng sinh hiện tại là phương pháp điều trị cơ bản. Mặc dù có những thất bại gần đây, phụ gia dược phẩm vẫn là một lĩnh vực nghiên cứu thú vị.
