Cấy ghép mô của tế bào HeLa trong huyền phù môi trường Hank, trước đó được trộn với dung dịch chứa polysome reticulocyte và/hoặc globin tự do, hemoglobin và huyết tương từ thỏ máu, đã được đồng nhất hóa, và một mẫu điện di của dải hemoglobin đã được thu được từ dịch lỏng; hemoglobin bị biến tính dưới các điều kiện cấy ghép mô.
