Tại những nơi có gánh nặng bệnh lao (TB) cao, ngày càng có nhiều chứng cứ cho thấy bệnh lao là phổ biến ở trẻ em mắc viêm phổi, nguyên nhân hàng đầu gây tử vong ở trẻ em dưới 5 tuổi trên toàn thế giới. Tiêu chuẩn chăm sóc hiện tại của WHO (SOC) cho trẻ nhỏ mắc viêm phổi chỉ xem xét chẩn đoán bệnh lao nếu trẻ có tiền sử triệu chứng kéo dài hoặc không đáp ứng với điều trị kháng sinh. Do đó, nhiều trẻ em mắc viêm phổi nặng liên quan đến bệnh lao hiện nay bị bỏ sót hoặc chẩn đoán quá muộn. Chúng tôi đề xuất một thử nghiệm chẩn đoán để đánh giá tác động đến tỷ lệ tử vong của việc bổ sung phát hiện sớm bệnh lao một cách hệ thống bằng cách sử dụng Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (Ultra) thực hiện trên mẫu dịch hút mũi họng (NPA) và mẫu phân vào quy trình chăm sóc của WHO cho trẻ em mắc viêm phổi nặng, sau đó bắt đầu ngay lập tức điều trị chống lao cho những trẻ có kết quả dương tính trên bất kỳ mẫu nào.
