Photosystem II chịu trách nhiệm cho hệ thống phân cực nước sinh học được thúc đẩy bởi ánh sáng trong quang hợp sinh oxy và chứa một cụm bao gồm một cation canxi và bốn ion mangan tại phức hợp oxy hóa nước của nó. Trong nghiên cứu này, chúng tôi xem xét khả năng tự lắp ráp của các lớp đơn oxit mangan với các hợp chất hữu cơ. Các cấu trúc có lớp của oxit mangan, bao gồm các nhóm guanidinium và imidazolium, đã được tổng hợp và đặc trưng hóa bằng kính hiển vi điện tử quét, kính hiển vi điện tử truyền qua, sắc ký tán xạ tia X, và quang phổ hấp thụ nguyên tử. Các hợp chất này có thể được coi là các mô hình cấu trúc mới cho phức hợp oxy hóa nước của Photosystem II. Điện thế quá áp của quá trình oxy hóa nước cho các hợp chất trong điều kiện này ở pH = 6.3 là ~0.6 V. Các hợp chất này có thể đại diện cho bước đầu tiên để tổng hợp một dạng hybrid của guanidinium hoặc imidazole kết hợp với mangan như một hệ thống giả lập sinh học cho phức hợp oxy hóa nước của Photosystem II.
