Hoa sen thiêng (Nelumbo nucifera) là một cây trang trí thủy sinh lâu năm quan trọng. Hình dạng hoa của nó xác định giá trị cảnh quan và trang trí. Tuy nhiên, các cơ chế liên quan đến sự phát triển của hoa sen vẫn còn mơ hồ. Các yếu tố phiên mã MADS-box đóng vai trò thiết yếu trong nhiều đặc điểm của sự phát triển cây trồng, đặc biệt là trong việc hình thành và phân loại cơ quan hoa. Hiện vẫn chưa rõ cách mà các yếu tố phiên mã MADS-box điều tiết sự hình thành cơ quan hoa trong hoa sen. Để có cái nhìn toàn diện về chức năng của các gen MADS-box trong sự phát triển hoa sen thiêng, chúng tôi đã phân loại hệ thống các thành viên của họ gen này dựa trên thông tin gen đã có sẵn. Tổng cộng, 44 gen MADS-box đã được xác định, trong đó có 16 gen loại I và 28 gen loại II được phân loại dựa trên phân tích phát sinh chủng loài. Hơn nữa, cấu trúc của các gen MADS-box và các kiểu biểu hiện của chúng cũng đã được phân tích hệ thống. Thêm vào đó, phân tích định vị sinh chất cho thấy chúng chủ yếu được định vị trong nhân tế bào, trong đó một đồng nhất SEPALLATA3 (SEP3) có tên là NnMADS14 đã được chứng minh là tham gia vào quá trình hình thành cơ quan hoa. Những kết quả này cung cấp thông tin căn bản về họ gen MADS-box và chức năng của chúng, có thể giúp ích không chỉ trong việc hiểu cơ chế hình thành cơ quan hoa mà còn trong việc nhân giống các giống cây có giá trị trang trí cao trong hoa sen.
