Fundamental study on arc welding in vacuum

A fundamental study on arc welding in vacuum is presented. Weld strength for the pipe-shaped electrode made of stainless steel is lower than that for the screw/nut electrode. To clear up the cause of it, anodic arc appearance and trace of electrode erosion are observed, being discussed in association with the arc discharge mode. Combining these results and thermal conduction analysis leads to an idea to improve the weld strength.
