Khi một người quan sát trẻ tuổi cố gắng điều tiết một cách ổn định trên một đối tượng cố định, phản ứng ở trạng thái ổn định nominal thường cho thấy những bất ổn hoặc dao động nhỏ (đôi khi được gọi là giao động vi mô hoặc dao động). Những giao động này thường có biên độ khoảng vài phần trăm đi-ôpt và phổ tần số mở rộng lên đến vài Hertz. Các thuộc tính của những giao động này được mô tả cho nhiều điều kiện xem khác nhau: đường kính đồng tử, độ hội tụ của mục tiêu, hình dạng mục tiêu, độ tương phản mục tiêu và độ sáng mục tiêu đều ảnh hưởng đến phổ tần số của các dao động, cũng như các dị tật về thị lực như nhược thị. Các vai trò khả dĩ của những giao động trong chức năng của hệ thống điều tiết được thảo luận. Có thể cho rằng các thành phần tần số cao hơn xung quanh 2 Hz có thể phát sinh từ đặc tính cơ học và đàn hồi của thấu kính, dây chằng và thể mi. Các thành phần ở tần số thấp hơn (<0.5 Hz) có thể có ý nghĩa hơn trong chức năng của hệ thống điều khiển điều tiết.
