Tỷ lệ thanh thiếu niên bị tiếp xúc với bạo lực trong các cộng đồng châu Âu còn tương đối chưa được nghiên cứu và các báo cáo về mối liên hệ giữa việc tiếp xúc với bạo lực cộng đồng và hành vi tự sát còn hiếm. Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu này là (1) khám phá tỷ lệ tiếp xúc với bạo lực cộng đồng trong một mẫu thanh thiếu niên đô thị châu Âu, (2) tìm hiểu mối quan hệ giữa việc tiếp xúc với bạo lực cộng đồng và ý tưởng tự sát/hành vi tự gây tổn thương có chủ ý, và (3) đánh giá ảnh hưởng của các triệu chứng trầm cảm và hành vi hung hăng lên mối quan hệ này. Các khảo sát tự báo cáo đã được tiến hành trên mẫu đại diện gồm 1509 thanh thiếu niên tại Antwerp (Bỉ). Tỷ lệ tiếp xúc với bạo lực vẫn còn cao nhưng thấp hơn so với các cộng đồng tại Mỹ. Cả ý tưởng tự sát và hành vi tự gây tổn thương có chủ ý đều có liên quan đến việc tiếp xúc với bạo lực. Ảnh hưởng theo giới của triệu chứng trầm cảm và hành vi hung hăng đối với sự liên kết giữa việc tiếp xúc với bạo lực và hành vi tự sát cho thấy cần có nghiên cứu sâu hơn.
