Trái ngược với giả thuyết tân tự do rằng việc khởi nghiệp là một nỗ lực mở và dễ tiếp cận mà ở đó nỗ lực cá nhân một mình xác định phần thưởng và địa vị, đã có nhiều bằng chứng cho thấy có một sự thiên kiến giới tính tiềm ẩn nhưng bị khuất lấp trong diễn ngôn khởi nghiệp. Theo đó, phụ nữ thường được xem như những người đàn ông thiếu thốn và không hoàn thiện; tuy nhiên, mặc dù đã có nhiều lời kêu gọi sử dụng lý thuyết nữ quyền như một khung phân tích để chứng minh việc tái sản sinh sự phụ thuộc đó, vẫn có rất ít bằng chứng cho thấy điều này đã xảy ra.
