Hormone tập trung melanin (MCH) là một peptide vòng được xác định ban đầu là một hormone lưu hành 17-amino acid ở cá xương, nơi nó được tiết ra từ tuyến yên để đáp ứng với stress và các kích thích môi trường. Ở cá, MCH làm sáng màu da bằng cách kích thích sự tụ tập của melanosome, các hạt chứa sắc tố trong các tế bào melanophore, các tế bào có nguồn gốc từ ngoại bì thần kinh được tìm thấy trong vảy cá. Mặc dù cấu trúc peptide giữa cá và động vật có vú được bảo tồn cao, nhưng ở động vật có vú, MCH không có tác dụng rõ rệt lên sắc tố; thay vào đó, dựa trên một loạt các thí nghiệm dược lý và di truyền, MCH đã nổi lên như một bộ điều chỉnh quan trọng của vùng huyết não trong việc duy trì cân bằng năng lượng, ảnh hưởng đến cả hành vi ăn uống và tiêu thụ năng lượng.
