Năm loài cỏ ba lá hàng năm từ Ethiopia và Kenya đã được đánh giá trong các nghiên cứu tại nhà kính về sản lượng sinh khối, hiệu quả sử dụng nước và tích lũy tổng nitơ (N) khi được trồng dưới các điều kiện độ ẩm khác nhau. Hai loại đất cao nguyên Ethiopia (Nitosol và Vertisol) đã được duy trì trong điều kiện độ ẩm đất cao hoặc thấp cho đến khi trưởng thành. Sản lượng sinh khối và tích lũy N lớn nhất xảy ra ở các điều kiện độ ẩm cao trên cả hai loại đất. Một loài (Trifolium tembense) vượt trội hơn bốn loài còn lại về sản lượng sinh khối dưới tất cả các điều kiện đất và độ ẩm.
