PurposeExamines the role of modern apprenticeships in helping to fill skill gaps at Aberdeen‐based Enterprise Engineering Services.Design/methodology/approachDraws extensively on the views of the company's managing director. Describes the personal experiences of two apprentices.FindingsReveals that engineering apprenticeships are a recognized route to full‐time employment with the company, and that 18 percent of the 140‐strong workforce once served as apprentices with the firm.Practical implicationsHighlights the managing director's view that modern apprenticeships help to make Enterprise Engineering Services more productive and competitive.Social implicationsArgues that modern apprenticeships are particularly helpful at a time when it is becoming more and more challenging for young people with little work experience to enter good organizations, since the current economic climate lends itself to many organizations opting for already‐skilled workers.Originality/valueProvides further solid evidence of the advantages a modern‐apprenticeship scheme can bring.
