Các tác động của nhiệt độ và mật độ con mồi đến tỷ lệ tăng trưởng gần đây (RGR) của cá mú châu Á, Scomber japonicus, đã được xem xét. Ấu trùng và cá giống Scomber spp. đã được thu thập dọc theo bờ biển Thái Bình Dương Boso–Kashimanada tại Nhật Bản từ tháng 3 đến tháng 7 vào các năm 2015 và 2016. Ấu trùng và cá giống được xác định là S. japonicus bằng phương pháp DNA đã được phân tích nội dung dạ dày và phân tích gia tăng tinh thể âm thanh. Các tác động của nhiệt độ và mật độ con mồi lên RGR đã được phân tích bằng mô hình hỗn hợp tuyến tính tổng quát (GLMM), cho thấy nhiệt độ có tác động tích cực tới RGR của ấu trùng trong các lớp chiều dài cơ thể (BL) < 5 mm, 5–7 mm, 7–9 mm và 9–11 mm. Mật độ con mồi cũng ảnh hưởng đến sự phát triển ở các lớp < 5 mm, 5–7 mm, 7–9 mm và > 11 mm, và tác động của mật độ con mồi lên RGR đối với ấu trùng và cá giống lớn (> 11 mm) mạnh hơn so với các ấu trùng nhỏ (< 9 mm). Ấu trùng S. japonicus biến đổi thành cá giống khi đạt khoảng 12 mm BL, và nhu cầu thức ăn tăng lên ở cá giống có thể dẫn đến sự phát triển phụ thuộc vào mật độ con mồi. Độ rộng của các gia tăng tinh thể âm thanh của ấu trùng và cá giống nhỏ hơn đáng kể so với các giai đoạn tương ứng ở cá S. japonicus 1 tuổi thu được từ các nghề cá đặt lưới ở khu vực Joban hoặc Kashimanada, cho thấy tình trạng chết do phụ thuộc vào sự phát triển.
