Các chẩn đoán tâm thần đồng thời rất phổ biến ở những người mắc rối loạn phổ tự kỷ (ASD). Ít thông tin về việc các tình trạng tâm thần đồng thời có thể ảnh hưởng đến đáp ứng điều trị thông qua CBT cho trẻ em cần được nghiên cứu thêm. Nghiên cứu hiện tại đã kiểm tra mối quan hệ giữa các chẩn đoán tâm thần đồng thời và đáp ứng đối với CBT cho lo âu ở chín mươi thanh thiếu niên mắc rối loạn phổ tự kỷ. Độ phức tạp tâm thần dường như không ảnh hưởng khác biệt đến đáp ứng điều trị. Một phần đáng kể của thanh thiếu niên có lo âu và các rối loạn thể hiện như ADHD, đã không còn đáp ứng tiêu chí cho các chẩn đoán thể hiện đó sau can thiệp. Kết quả cho thấy thanh thiếu niên mắc rối loạn phổ tự kỷ và lo âu có các hồ sơ tâm thần phức tạp và CBT cho lo âu có thể ảnh hưởng tích cực đến các chẩn đoán đồng thời. Ngoài ra, cần có sự đánh giá kỹ lưỡng và tinh vi về các triệu chứng tâm thần ở thanh thiếu niên mắc rối loạn phổ tự kỷ để đảm bảo sự phân biệt giữa chẩn đoán lo âu và các triệu chứng tâm thần đồng thời khác.
