School Age Outcomes of Children Diagnosed Early and Later with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Early diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder is considered best practice, increasing access to early intervention. Yet, many children are diagnosed after 3-years. The current study investigated the school age outcomes of children who received an early and later diagnosis of ASD. The cognitive and behavioural outcomes of children diagnosed early (n = 48), were compared to children diagnosed after 3-years (n = 37). Children diagnosed early accessed more intervention, demonstrated better verbal and overall cognition at school age, were more likely to attend mainstream school and required less ongoing support than children diagnosed later. Behavioural differences were not found between groups. Earlier diagnosis is important and is likely to promote more positive outcomes at school age due to increased opportunity for EI.
Intelligence Patterns Among Children with High-Functioning Autism, Phenylketonuria, and Childhood Head Injury

High-functioning children with autistic-spectrum disorder show the typical pattern of lower Comprehension relative to their own scores on Block Design. This profile is shared, almost exactly, by age- and IQ-matched children with poorer control PKU. Quite distinct profiles are shown by children with better control PKU, who show no difference between Block Design and Comprehension, and by children with head injury involving frontal lobe contusion, who show slightly better Comprehension than Block Design. The data bear on several questions: the relation between Comprehension deficits and language functions measured by Vocabulary; the limits of the advantages conveyed by higher IQ to autistic individuals; whether impaired Comprehension in autism indexes persisting symptoms and/or impairments on theory of mind tasks; the possibility that dopamine deficiency is common to autism and poorer control PKU; and the need for future research aimed at understanding the relations among neurodevelopmental disorders.
Autistic Traits and Symptoms of Social Anxiety are Differentially Related to Attention to Others’ Eyes in Social Anxiety Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) have partly overlapping symptoms. Gaze avoidance has been linked to both SAD and ASD, but little is known about differences in social attention between the two conditions. We studied eye movements in a group of treatment-seeking adolescents with SAD (N = 25), assessing SAD and ASD dimensionally. The results indicated a double dissociation between two measures of social attention and the two symptom dimensions. Controlling for social anxiety, elevated autistic traits were associated with delayed orienting to eyes presented among distractors. In contrast, elevated social anxiety levels were associated with faster orienting away from the eyes, when controlling for autistic traits. This distinction deepens our understanding of ASD and SAD.
Mentoring University Students with ASD: A Mentee-centered Approach

This study presents a conceptual understanding of how mentorship is experienced by the participants of a mentorship program for university students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. We interviewed the participants of the Autism Mentorship Initiative at Simon Fraser University. A grounded theory approach was used to systematically organize data from interviews and documents to reveal themes that were salient to the mentees (students with autism; n = 9) and mentors (neurotypical students; n = 9). The following five main themes were identified and interrelated under the core theme of A Mentee-centered Approach: (1) The Natural Progression of the Relationship, (2) The Supportive Mentor, (3) The Meeting Process, (4) Identifying and Implementing Goals, and (5) Learning Together. An in-depth analysis of a mentorship process is described.

Oral Health and Behavioral Management of Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder: A 30-year Retrospective Study

Purpose: This article aims to determine the oral health status, the dental treatment, the behavioral management techniques, and the follow-up of pediatric autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) patients treated at the Clinic for Pediatric Patients with Disabilities (CPPD) at a public university in Brazil. Methods. The medical records of all the patients seen between 1990 and 2020 were evaluated. Data were collected on the autistic patients’ medical and dental conditions, treatments, behavior during dental visits, behavioral management techniques used, and the entire follow-up period at the clinic. The Student’s t-test and chi-square tests were used to perform the statistical analysis (α = 0.05%). Results: Sixty-six records of ASD children were analyzed from a total of 656 dental records. The majority were male (80.3%). The mean age was 7.39 ± 2.75 years. All the children had a cognitive deficit, and 62.5% used medication. Most of the children arrived with caries lesions (56.1%), and the mean number of decayed, missed and filled teeth in both the deciduous (dmft-d) and permanent dentition (DMFT) was 2.45 ± 3.13 and 0.87 ± 1.51, respectively. The restorative technique was the most commonly used procedure (54.5%), and protective stabilization was the most frequently used behavioral management technique (18.2%). Of the children who sought treatment, 86.4% were discharged, and 15.2% abandoned the procedure. The majority (those discharged) continued to undergo regular follow-up at the clinic (86%), and the incidence of new caries lesions observed was 33.33% Conclusions: Although our ASD patients had a high frequency of caries and dental treatment needs, we observed good adherence to the treatment, with a low dropout rate, and high discharge rate.
Tactile defensiveness in children with developmental disabilities: Responsiveness and habituation

Tactile defensiveness (TD) is characterized by behaviors such as rubbing, scratching, negative expressions, withdrawal, or avoidance in response to tactile stimulation. An inhibition deficit has been implied in the literature and is the focus of this study. School-aged children with developmental disabilities were first assessed for level of TD using three measures. Later, the children were presented with a repeated tactile stimulus while engaged in a computer game. Intensity, duration, and latency of the responses were recorded on each trial. It was hypothesized that higher levels of TD would be associated with (a) greater responsiveness and (b) slower habituation rates to the tactile stimulus. Correlations of three separate TD measures and a series of 3×10 (Level of TD by Responsiveness across trials) repeated measures ANOVAs were used to test the two hypotheses. Children who demonstrated higher levels of TD on some of the preliminary measures also showed higher responsiveness in the experimental situation. There was no general habituation effect, and the limited group by trials interactions were not interpretable. We concluded that there is evidence for a differential sensitivity in TD, but not an inhibition deficit. Another significant finding included a negative correlation between TD and developmental age.
Long-term Behavioral Consequences of the COVID-19 Pandemic for Autistic Individuals and Their Mothers

Long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on autistic individuals and their families are recently emerging. This study investigated these effects in 40 mother-child dyads by measuring the behavioral problems of autistic individuals (via Aberrant Behavior Checklist) and their mothers’ anxiety levels (via Beck Anxiety Inventory) during the pre-pandemic period, one month after, and one year after its onset. One year into the pandemic, aberrant behaviors of autistic individuals worsened only for those whose mothers had high anxiety levels. The continued negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the behavior of autistic individuals is related to their mother’s anxiety level, highlighting the need to support maternal mental health in families with individuals with autism.
Evidence for Impairments in Using Static Line Drawings of Eye Gaze Cues to Orient Visual-Spatial Attention in Children with High Functioning Autism

We examined the ability to use static line drawings of eye gaze cues to orient visual-spatial attention in children with high functioning autism (HFA) compared to typically developing children (TD). The task was organized such that on valid trials, gaze cues were directed toward the same spatial location as the appearance of an upcoming target, while on invalid trials gaze cues were directed to an opposite location. Unlike TD children, children with HFA showed no advantage in reaction time (RT) on valid trials compared to invalid trials (i.e., no significant validity effect). The two stimulus onset asynchronies (200 ms, 700 ms) did not differentially affect these findings. The results suggest that children with HFA show impairments in utilizing static line drawings of gaze cues to orient visual-spatial attention.
Newborn minor physical anomalies and prediction of infant behavior

The relationship between a newborn score of minor physical anomalies (MPAs) and behavior at ages 1 and 2 was examined. From an initial screening population of 933, 63 high anomaly and 78 low anomaly infants were followed until age 2 by examiners blind for the newborn anomaly score. High anomaly infants were more likely to be temperamentally difficult as rated by parent interview and direct observation. A subgroup of six infants who were considered irritable at both ages 1 and 2 were all from the high anomaly group. However, there was little agreement between behavioral ratings across situations and over time, and there were no significant predictors of behavior problems at age 2 based on any newborn or 1-year measure. These results indicate that the newborn anomaly score by itself is unlikely to prove clinically useful in predicting preschool behavior problems for an unselected population. The usefulness of this measure for other, “high-risk,” populations remains to be explored.
