Hóa trị liệu hỗ trợ đã được chấp nhận như một phương pháp điều trị tiêu chuẩn sau phẫu thuật cắt bỏ ung thư tụy; tuy nhiên, thời điểm tối ưu giữa phẫu thuật và khởi đầu hóa trị liệu hỗ trợ vẫn chưa được báo cáo. Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu này là xác định thời điểm tối ưu của hóa trị liệu hỗ trợ sau phẫu thuật cắt bỏ ung thư tụy. Hồ sơ của 104 bệnh nhân đã nhận hóa trị liệu hỗ trợ sau khi phẫu thuật cắt bỏ ung thư tụy curative đã được xem xét một cách hồi cứu. Các bệnh nhân được phân thành hai nhóm dựa trên việc họ có nhận hóa trị liệu hỗ trợ ban đầu trong vòng 20 ngày sau phẫu thuật (≦20 ngày, n = 57) hoặc hơn 20 ngày sau phẫu thuật (>20 ngày, n = 47). Mối quan hệ giữa thời gian khởi đầu hóa trị liệu hỗ trợ, các yếu tố lâm sàng - bệnh lý khác, và sự sống còn đã được phân tích. Tỷ lệ biến chứng sau phẫu thuật thấp hơn đáng kể ở nhóm ≦20 ngày so với nhóm >20 ngày (P = 0.003); không có sự khác biệt đáng kể nào trong các yếu tố lâm sàng - bệnh lý khác. Phân tích đa biến cho thấy thời gian khởi đầu hóa trị liệu hỗ trợ là một yếu tố tiên lượng độc lập của sự sống không bệnh (P = 0.009) và sự sống toàn bộ (P = 0.037). Nhóm ≦20 ngày có tỷ lệ sống sót toàn bộ trong 5 năm dài hơn so với nhóm >20 ngày (52% so với 26%, P = 0.013) cũng như tỷ lệ sống không bệnh trong 5 năm dài hơn (53% so với 22%, P = 0.007). Hóa trị liệu hỗ trợ cho bệnh nhân bị ung thư tụy đã được cắt bỏ nên được khởi đầu càng sớm càng tốt sau phẫu thuật cắt bỏ. Cần phòng ngừa biến chứng sau phẫu thuật để có thể khởi đầu sớm.
