Để điều trị xuất huyết varices thực quản, khi các phương pháp điều trị cổ điển thất bại, phẫu thuật chặn xuyên bụng theo phương pháp Hassab được khuyến cáo trong biến thể này. Để tránh hoại tử khu vực đáy dạ dày thiếu máu, khu vực này được lộn lại. Trong 8 trường hợp, sau phẫu thuật chỉ xảy ra một lần chảy máu nhẹ (1 ca tử vong sau phẫu thuật do suy hô hấp).
