Giảm mật độ cây đứng làm tăng sức đề kháng, khả năng phục hồi và hồi phục của cây sồi (Quercus petraea) đối với hạn hán nghiêm trọng (năm 2003), đặc biệt ở những nơi khô cằn, và tác động này không phụ thuộc vào địa vị xã hội của cây. Kiểm soát cạnh tranh được khuyến khích như một chiến lược để điều tiết phản ứng của cây đối với những thay đổi khí hậu dự đoán.
