Nghiên cứu của tôi khám phá quan điểm của người Maya về nông nghiệp neo-truyền thống như một nguồn gốc của sức khỏe chuyển hóa và khả năng chống chọi với đại dịch toàn cầu về bệnh tiểu đường loại hai. Bài viết này dựa trên nghiên cứu dân tộc học dài hạn và phỏng vấn trong các cộng đồng thuộc Khu bảo tồn Núi Maya (MMR) ở miền nam Belize, một khu vực có tỷ lệ bệnh tiểu đường thấp so với dân số quốc gia và toàn cầu. Những người tham gia nghiên cứu cho rằng tỷ lệ bệnh tiểu đường thấp hơn ở MMR là kết quả của nông nghiệp nông dân neo-truyền thống và tự cung tự cấp trên đất tổ tiên. Sức khỏe chuyển hóa tốt thể hiện sự hình thành của các hệ thống thực phẩm thiết lập mối quan hệ vật chất và xã hội lành mạnh với cảnh quan. Nghiên cứu này gợi ý rằng bệnh tiểu đường là một vấn đề phổ biến trong các hệ thống thực phẩm hiện đại và đề xuất các phương thức thực phẩm neo-truyền thống như một thuốc giải xã hội cho bệnh tật dinh dưỡng. Nghiên cứu của tôi chứng minh và đáp ứng nhu cầu cần thêm số liệu phân tích sâu về tỷ lệ bệnh tiểu đường trong các cộng đồng bản địa, đóng góp vào tài liệu khoa học xã hội về tầm quan trọng của các mô hình nông nghiệp quy mô nhỏ đối với sức khỏe cộng đồng, và cung cấp một nghiên cứu điển hình về thành công trong việc phòng ngừa bệnh tiểu đường. Tôi kết hợp các quan điểm của người Maya với tài liệu nhân học về sự hình thành và nông nghiệp quy mô nhỏ để gợi ý các phương thức thực phẩm neo-truyền thống như những lựa chọn tốt hơn cho sự phát triển nông nghiệp tư bản.
