Đại dịch COVID-19 đã gây bất ngờ cho toàn bộ dân số. Thế giới đã phải đối mặt với một đại dịch chưa từng có tiền lệ. Chỉ có cúm Tây Ban Nha mới có những hậu quả thảm khốc tương tự. Do đó, các biện pháp quyết liệt (phong tỏa) đã được áp dụng trên toàn cầu. Dịch vụ chăm sóc sức khỏe đã bị quá tải bởi lượng bệnh nhân đổ dồn đến, thường cần sự chăm sóc với cường độ cao. Tử vong đã có liên quan đến các bệnh lý nền nặng nề, bao gồm các bệnh mãn tính. Do đó, những bệnh nhân có tình trạng yếu ớt đã trở thành nạn nhân của nhiễm SARS-COV-2.
