Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu này là xây dựng một thuyết tình huống về năng lực tổ chức dựa trên việc xác định các biến quyết định liên quan đến thiết kế của các tổ chức. Bài báo hỗ trợ một mô hình trong đó hiệu suất vượt trội là kết quả của sự phù hợp chính xác giữa kiến thức áp dụng và cấu trúc tổ chức. Cụ thể, nghiên cứu cho thấy mức độ chính thức hóa cấu trúc mà một tổ chức áp dụng phản ánh cách thức kiến thức kiểm soát dòng chảy hành động. Nghiên cứu xác định một loại kiến thức chức năng đặc biệt được sử dụng để điều chỉnh thứ tự tạm thời của các nhiệm vụ, được gọi là kiến thức kết nối. Ảnh hưởng của kiến thức kết nối đến mức độ chính thức hóa tổ chức được thử nghiệm thực nghiệm dựa trên dữ liệu thu thập từ lĩnh vực chăm sóc sức khỏe. Áp dụng mô hình hồi quy logistic theo chiều dọc trên tập dữ liệu gồm 105 bệnh viện nằm ở New York và New Jersey, bài báo đo lường và so sánh xác suất của các nhiệm vụ điều trị chính được cung cấp bởi các sắp xếp bệnh viện chính thức hóa, trong đó các bác sĩ làm việc như là nhân viên thay vì là những chuyên gia độc lập.
